The Empty Cup…

In Uncategorized on July 20, 2009 at 3:08 am

Socrates is quoted as saying: “I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing” Words from the wise.  How is this possible? After all, Socrates was a renowned philosopher, one of the foremost thinkers of his time who laid the foundation for Western philosophy. Well, perhaps the following story will shed some light.

A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor’s cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. “It’s full already! No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.”

If you really want to improve yourself, you will need to heed these sage words.

We may have an MBA and graduated sum-cumma laude, we may even be the best athlete or we may have even attained a Phd, however we must realize that  we do not know everything! If we do know-it-all, then why can a Dr. not build a bridge? Why can a teacher not perform surgery? Why can a window-cleaner not split an atom?

We must be open and accept that while we may know SOMETHING we don’t know EVERYTHING. We may be full of knowledge, but we must remain open to the fact that we always have much to learn.
Socrates was right, because as an “empty cup” one is humble enough to accept and let go of preconceived notions thus making oneself a worthy student.

It is wise to teach, but it is wiser to ALWAYS be a student (K Darji-winning karma)

Keep on winning…
